Ear surgery (Otoplasty)
What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty refers to the surgical reshaping of the pinna or outer ear.
The aim may be to correct a deformity or to improve appearance.
Reconstructive surgery involves building up the outer ear after an accident or because of a congenital deformity.
Ideal Candidates
Otoplasty can be done at any age after the ears have reached their full size, usually after age 5, through adulthood.
Ear surgery may also be helpful for the following conditions:
• Large or protruding ears
• Lop ear (top of the ear folds downward or inward)
• Cupped ear (a small ear)
• Shell ear (no outer curve in the cartilage)
• Large, stretched, or torn earlobes
• Earlobes with large creases and wrinkles
After the ears have healed completely, there is usually a faint scar on the back of the ears.
Because of the strategic placement of the incisions in ear surgery, the scars are virtually unnoticeable and typically fade with time. You’ll notice an immediate permanent change in the appearance of your ears.
